If you have been getting emails from Microsoft advising you to upgrade, you may not have noticed some of them are requiring you to opt out of the upgrade. If you do not, our friends (and I use that term loosely) in Redmond will do it for you. Automatically. Overnight. Yes. Really.This just happened to one of our clients and needless to say, some things stopped working. Moving to Windows 10 needs to be a planned process - ensuring that you have gone to the Microsoft site and made sure your apps have been approved to work on Windows 10.
To help avoid the update, you should set the computer to turn off upgrades - unless of course you like surprises.
Here's how:
To block the upgrade by using Computer Configuration, follow these steps:
- Click Computer Configuration.
- Click Policies.
- Click Administrative Templates.
- Click Windows Components.
- Click Windows Update.
- Double-click Turn off the upgrade to the latest version of Windows through Windows Update.
- Click Enable.
Keeping a watchful eye over your Windows environment and your software is an ongoing task. Make sure you do your homework and stay vigilant.
